Courthouse visits

Visiting courthouses allows newcomer students to observe Canadian courtrooms in operation and witness how different the reality is compared to the mostly American courtroom images in the media to which students are regularly exposed. Participating students observe court hearings and meet and talk with different legal professionals.

LAWS Newcomer Youth Program courthouse visits are preceded by in-class preparation workshops that orient students to the particular courthouse they are visiting, acquaint them with the roles they will see represented, and examine the types of cases they might observe. Different ESL levels visit the Ontario Court of Justice courthouses, the Superior Court of Ontario, and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
